Branden Grace’s ruling after drive finds tree stump, still makes miracle par

In third round 4 ball at the 2022 Zurich Classic of New Orleans, Branden Grace's tee shot lands in a small, split stump at the -4 13th hole. After going over with a guidelines official, Grace drops after taking an unplayable. He then hits his third shot to 20 feet above the hole and drains pipes the taking place putt for an amazing conserve.

  1. That’s crazy. I thought the rules allow you to respot a ball like this with out taking a loss. And why wasn’t the grounds surveyed before the tournament started? This is crazy.

    1. @ig rand its an obstacle. you shouldn’t get relief from something that is there for a purpose.

    2. @ig rand well if you look closely enough then you’ll realize that it gobbled Branden Grace’s ball,so that’s one,two like the gent @Thunder said above, that lil stub could ricochet the ball in any direction if not slam dunked like BG did…like Dottie said, that tree is 340yrds from the TeeBox, as you’re fully aware, these golfers bomb it miles,as was BG’s drive, that tree’s gonna wreak havoc to those few unlucky souls like it did here.😉

  2. I bet when that tree fell due to rot they had a conversation about whether they should remove the stump or not… everyone agreed that no one would ever hit it… and now we’re here lol.

  3. I thought the rule said that if your unplayable was in the rough, the relief and drop had to be in the rough ? no improved conditions from where the ball came to rest: rough to fairway.

  4. Stump should of been grinded out years ago. They have no place just off a fairway perhaps only in a hazard!

  5. Branden Grace, like many South African players, has one on the smoothest swing on the planet. Note to groundskeeper, remove stump for next year. Or ground under repair signs. Any unsightly stumps in Augusta?!

  6. I drove one into a 6 inch drainage pipe on a par 5. I counted it as an ace and moved on 😁

  7. I’d a similar incident at the weekend my approach shot hit the bunker edge green side and ran onto the concrete at the base of the next hole tee off sign I disagreed with my playing partners that I thought I’d a free drop as the sign was put there manually. They all said it was like landing against a tree but again I disagreed as a tree is the naturally and there’s no relief there unless it’s staked but I took the penalty drop they wanted me to …I then checked in the clubhouse with one of the match and handicap officials and he agreed with me I’d a free drop from the sign lol the look on my playing partners faces was priceless tho we’d won the match anyway but in like over 40 years playing golf none of our balls had ever stopped where mine had at least now we know ..
