Love the idea of breaking up the scorecard.. At the course I grew up on holes 10, 11 and 12 were all birdie-able but too often ruined by a bad hole 8/9 sticking me in a funk.
Don’t read my name !!!!

Don’t wanna come across like some brown nosing fan but this video is excellent. Some very simple tips but I can certainly learn from these! Especially watching the ball intently! So simple but could reduce 3 or 4 shots a round. Thanks 👍🏻
3 things I didn’t do before watching this video: play with better players, break up the score card, watching what other people were playing with. Thanks for the tips!

This is incredibly helpful! I love how tangible these tips are! Zero cost associated!

Great video. Better advice than offering swing changes to someone you’ve never seen swing a club and so simple but overlooked

Definitely trying the card-breaking-up thing. At my local muni, #6 is my nemesis (and it’s just a straight par 4, but whatever). It would be nice to think of that as the end of a small set of three holes instead of the hole that wrecks my entire front nine.
LET TALK 👆👆📦📦..
Ricky, please do more of this kind of video. I love the break 75 series but these are useful tips for on the course 👍🏻 keep up the great work

Old school Rick video gotta love seeing him still giving advice and encouragement to more and more people!! Keep it up!!

The little things add up to big things. I’ve broken up my scorecard into groups of 3 since my dad took me to play mini golf the very first time. I still do it to this day since I started playing the game regularly. Good stuff, Rick!

Aim for the center of every green, regardless of pin placement. That has helped me a lot without changing anything

I love that 3 hole breakdown. Prevents you from getting ahead of yourself and calms the nerves down. If I mess up on these three, I can work on the next. Absolutely love that!

That last tip is huge. When I used to play with my friends that also weren’t good, not one of us could break 100. After 2 years of playing with my in-laws who are scratch golfers, I’m consistently breaking 90. It’s not a crazy low score by any means, but when compared to how bad I was, it’s day and night.

One of the best pieces of advice I got when I started playing golf from a much better player was adjusting how I kept score. He asked me – “What is your goal on this round? Are you trying to shoot par?” I told him that would be great but I would be thrilled to play bogey golf. His response was – Then why are you keeping score in relation to par? He then asked me how I felt when I bogeyed a hole and had to write down 5 on a par 4 if my goal was to make 5?
He suggested I play every hole as a par 5 which, on a Par 72 course, is an 18 over par 90 – Bogey Golf. So I did. It’s just mind games but I have to admit when I made a 3 or 4 it felt great to write down a negative number on the card. When I birdied a Par 3 I got to record a -3 on the card. At the end of the front 9 I was never in as bad a mood when I looked at the card and saw I was even instead of 9 over.

Honestly Rick,,, your timing is absolutely perfect with this video. I had my 11yo son out playing 9 holes yesterday and he was getting incredibly frustrated. Expecting to be amazing and playing like a pro after all his practice at the range over the winter. Some of the tips and messages that you gave out here were absolutely spot on and although I tried to explain a lot of this yesterday during the frustrations. It just wasn’t sinking in. Then you pop up with this video, showing yourself and other pros hitting bad shots and my son watched it twice and because it’s coming from a major influence like yourself. I think he is actually starting to realise that golf is difficult no matter what your level and that the enjoyment is getting better,, no matter how gradual. I told him that you started when you were 11 and he is buzzing that if he works hard enough he could reach similar levels. Just like to say a thank you to you and the team for helping us all with this great game no matter what our level. My son wants to go out and get straight back at it again. So getting another tee time booked… result ❤

As someone who plays off 12 the idea of breaking it down into 6 “courses” of 3 holes massively helped me. Shooting +2 thru 3 sounds far more achievable cos it brings you back to reality which is “I need 2 bogeys and a par” which sounds very doable.
8. Hit the ball lower to the ground whenever possible (putt from off the green, bump & run, 8-iron chip, etc.).
It reduces the chances of shanking, thinning, or chunking a higher lofted club)
I think Rick already said it in one of previous videos and it’s partially here “be ready for bad shots”, but I think it’s extremely important and it’s an issue of many handicappers especially the high one – DO NOT PLAY ON PAR, DO PLAY ON YOUR HANDICAP (like par 4 hole – it’s not you goal to be on green on second shot with handicap 36 you have to more shots)
these are actually some really practical and good tips, thanks rick!
Great tips for people starting or advanced that need a little grounding back to stable decisions.
One thing – how do you manage players that don’t react well to poor performance? I try to not pout for a long time after a shot. But we all know some of those players that drag their misery for holes on (and “don’t play with them” is not acceptable)
I’ve stumbled into that breaking the course up by 3’s thing by happenstance. And then I boiled that down to my first 3 holes. I usually shoot in the 80’s, so if I can shoot a 15 in the first 3, it’s fairly easily attainable (even with no warmup and rushed onto the tee and a headache and wife’s delivering a baby in the hospital and all the legit and illegit excuses your/my brain can manufacture), takes pressure off me, helps me ease into the round, is usually beatable, and gives me a confidence turbo boost for the rest of the round whatever shape that ends up taking. Love the tips here, though!
